Climate and Environment Investigations at #CIJSummer 2023

Where to find good climate and environment stories? How to report them for the biggest impact?

This year we are bringing journalists specialising in climate and environment investigations from all over the world.

From industries destroying the environment to the broken promises, from greenwash to water-focused stories, our speakers will talk you through the methods they use, the lessons they learned and the skills they use the most.

Arun Karki

Based in Nepal, Arun is a leading data journalist, trainer and the founder of the Center for Data Journalism Nepal (CDJN). Since 2020, he has spearheaded various data-driven reporting projects, including COVID-19 data reporting and climate investigations, employing open-source intelligence.

Basant Pratap Singh

Basant Pratap Singh is an investigative journalist based in Far-Western Nepal, with 17 years' experience in the field. He has built a reputation for himself as a reporter covering pressing issues related to the environment, climate change, human rights, gender, and social affairs, as well as good governance in remote and rural parts of Western Nepal.

Ed Davey

Ed Davey is a Special Correspondent for Climate Accountability at the Associated Press, working to hold corporations and politicians to account for their contribution to global warming. He specialises in investigative and environmental journalism.

Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi

Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi is a freelance multimedia investigative journalist, passionate about environmental and climate justice. She specialises in fact-checking, data journalism and OSINT and is an alumna of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network of the Reuters Institute of Journalism.

Gianluca Liva

Gianluca Liva is an Italian science journalist and science communicator. He is one of the founders of RADAR Magazine, the website of an Italian collective of science, investigative and environmental journalists and photographers.

Luuk Sengers

Luuk Sengers is an experienced teacher and investigative journalist. He lectures at universities and in newsrooms and writes data-driven stories for the leading Dutch magazine De Groene Amsterdammer. He is also the co-developer of Story-Based Inquiry.

Michèle Ebongue

Michèle Ebongue is an investigative journalist, data journalist, fact-checker, blogger, and Head of News Desk at Data Cameroon. Michelle started as a radio journalist, but with time moved to print.

Sechaba Mokhethi

Sechaba Mokhethi is an investigative journalist and founding partner of MNN Centre for Investigative Journalism in Lesotho. He started out as a political writer for Public Eye, a local newspaper in Lesotho.

Dr Tobi Oluwatola

Dr Tobi Oluwatola is an experienced executive in the energy sector with over 16 years of expertise. He is the Chief Executive of TAO Energy. Previously, he was the Executive Director of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, an African media innovation think tank.

Lucas Amin

Lucas Amin is a reporter on openDemocracy’s investigations team. He has used information law for more than a decade and co-authored CIJ handbooks on Freedom of Information and EIRs. Louis Goddard

Louis Goddard is co-founder of Data Desk, an investigative consultancy focused on climate and the commodities industry. He previously worked for The Times and Global Witness, where he produced data-driven investigations, including as part of a high-impact campaign against Russian fossil fuel exports.

Sam Leon

Sam Leon is co-founder of Data Desk, an investigative consultancy focused on climate and the commodities industry. He previously worked at Global Witness where he ran their digital investigations unit.
