Digital Tools for Investigation

Digital Tools for Investigation is a two-hour workshop covering a wide range of digital tools and methodologies that can be used for investigations.

This is a short course for those new to open-source intelligence. Participants will be introduced to many techniques and platforms and provided with guidance on how to use them.

Group size: max 12 people.
Class duration: 2hrs x 1 day
Level of participation: high. Hands-on exercises, regular Q&As and participant contributions.

Newsrooms of any size, universities and other communities can greatly benefit from this introductory workshop to open-source intelligence, public record searches and a range of other digital tools that will make your investigations both quicker and more effective.

As a practical hands-on training, you will discover tools to help you:

  • research more effectively using search operators
  • investigate using social media
  • make the most of geolocated data
  • run verification checks for images, video footage & websites
  • use public registries and other administrative online data sources

Technical Requirements

This course will be hosted on Zoom.

Guy Porter

Guy Porter comes from a background of data analysis and research. He is a former anti-disinformation researcher for Avaaz where he investigated and identified bot accounts, bot farms, trolls, and fake news operations on social media platforms in the lead up to the April 2019 EU elections.

In line with our non-profit mission, our pricing operates on a sliding scale, ensuring large organisations pay more to subsidise places for smaller newsrooms, freelancers and students.

*Students places for this course are capped, due to limited capacity. Anyone registering as a student will be asked for a photo/scan of their student ID ahead of the course.

**Employed individuals who cannot have their employers pay for the course are entitled to the freelancer rate. Note that we are a small charity and rely on your honesty so please do not register as a freelancer if your employer is reimbursing you for the course.

We have a strict policy of No Refund and No Transfer of bookings.
