Josie Stewart

Josie Stewart is Director of Transparency International Defence and Security. She has previously worked for and with governments, multilateral institutions, development agencies, militaries, law enforcement agencies, civil society, and the private sector, in policy and delivery roles supporting effective and accountable governance. She is an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute and serves on the board of Spotlight on Corruption. She was sacked by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2022 for revealing to a journalist information concerning the UK’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. Josie has lived and worked in Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, the UAE, and Afghanistan.

In the wake of the chaos surrounding the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Josie Stewart, then a senior official at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, became concerned that the truth was not being told by the government and talked to a journalist.
