The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) has teamed up for a third consecutive year with the Google News Initiative to bring skills and techniques available through the Google News Initiative’s suite of applications and other digital tools to local newsrooms, independent media, academics and ordinary citizens around the UK.

The Access to Tools programme will see the CIJ lead 25 workshops between April 2020 and February 2021, training journalists and citizens in key areas, and showing how digital tools can improve their journalism.

Free Training for Journalists Across the UK

The workshops will be free for organisations to host and for participants to attend.

The project kicked-off in 2018 with the CIJ’s first regional, one-day conference in advanced investigative tradecraft at Newcastle University.

It brought together the best resources and trainers to teach people how to find things out and featured training in digital tools as a constituent part of our broader investigative offer; keynote lectures and panel conversations on how to investigate.

It was the first time we’d hosted a conference of this kind outside London and we hope it will be the first of many.

About the training:

What does the training involve?

The training is a two-hour workshop that looks specifically at tools that can be used for investigations. Further resources are available at the Google News Initiative Training Center. Thanks to a grant from the Google News Initiative, the CIJ will cover the cost of the training and pay for trainer to come to you.

How is the training affected by Covid-19?

Our Access To Tools training programme is uninterrupted by the COVID-19 crisis – while social distancing measures are in place, our training workshops are hosted online on Zoom. To find out more about how we use the Zoom platform, please check out our Zoom Infosec page

Who are the trainers?

Our five trainers are Guy Porter, Pupul Chatterjee, Zoe Blackler, Laura Garcia, Rubén Huerta Zapién. They will be delivering the sessions, as well as CIJ staff.

How do I bring the training to my organisation?

Training is available to news organisations throughout the UK. You will need to provide a room for participants with a projector, laptop connection, wifi and power points. We expect the host organisation to play a large part in marketing the workshop and would aim for around 15 participants.

What tools will I learn in the workshop?

You will be taught a range of investigative tools to enhance your research skills and help you develop stories. This is a practical hands-on workshop that will teach you skills you can take back to your newsroom.
