Why Code?
A talk for those who are unsure on how knowledge of code can help journalists in their investigations. Leila Haddou talks to a developer, Max Harlow; a code newbie data journalist, Niamh McIntyre; and a code old-hand data journalist and editor, Helena Bengtsson. The discussion covers the use of code for journalism, which language to learn, and why and how it can improve your investigations. Questions from the audience are welcome and encouraged.

Leila Haddou
Leila Haddou is an investigative and data journalist. She has previously worked for BBC Panorama, The Times and Sunday Times, the FT and the Guardian. She has an avid interest in how technology can aid investigative reporting.
Max Harlow
Max Harlow is a data reporter at Bloomberg News. He also runs Journocoders, a community group for journalists to develop technical skills for use in their reporting.
Niamh McIntyre
Niamh McIntyre is a journalist on the Guardian’s data projects team, working on data-driven investigations and news stories. Recent stories include an investigation into schools using crowdfunding websites and coverage of the UK’s gender pay gap.
