Excel 1: The Power of Data Analysis for Stories

Data is everywhere and spreadsheets can help reporters to find story ideas in the data. This course introduces data analysis using Microsoft Excel. Participants will learn basic calculations, rates, ratios and analytic tools that generate story ideas.

Excel 2: Finding Patterns in the Data

The second spreadsheet course covers built-in analytical tools, such as sorting, filtering and chart creation, tools that help reporters quickly find great stories within databases.

Excel 3: Summarising Your Data for the Big Picture

To complete your spreadsheet toolkit, learn how to make pivot tables that will summarise trends in your data.

Technical Requirements

The class takes place in a Goldsmiths computer lab. No laptops required, but you can use your own if you like.

Helena Bengtsson

Helena Bengtsson is the data journalism editor at Gota Media, a regional publishing company in the south of Sweden with 13 local titles. She previously worked as the data journalism editor at Sveriges Television, Sweden’s national television broadcaster, for 27 years and has also served as Editor, Data Projects of the Guardian UK between 2014-2017.

Jonathan Stoneman

Jonathan Stoneman is a freelance trainer specialising in data journalism. He has been working with data since 2010. Before that he worked at the BBC – as a reporter, producer, editor of output in Macedonian and Croatian, and finally as head of training at BBC World Service.
