7 September 2024

Saturday 7th September 2024

The CIJ, in partnership with the National Library of Scotland, is returning to Glasgow. Join us on Saturday 7th September for a day of free workshops where you can learn some investigative skills, and then hear how to put them into practice with Imogen Barrer from the ITV investigations team.

What to expect?

Ever wondered what it takes to be an investigative journalist? Ever thought something demanded further scrutiny but didn’t know where to start? If the answer is yes, then the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s free day-long event is for you.

We are offering practical workshops in investigative skills: an introduction to finding company information, open-source investigations and understanding supply chains.

  • Martin Tomkinson will talk about his career working as a financial reporter and intrepid investigative journalist, and offer pearls of wisdom and tips for budding investigative journalists along the way
  • Sarah Cammarata will show how journalists can reveal valuable insights into a person’s identity by examining digital footprints
  • Maxence Peigné will explain how to use open-source material to investigate companies
  • Tansy Hoskins looks at supply-chains and the process of tracking commodity flows through sources and shipping records
  • Our keynote speaker Imogen Barrer is a multi-award winning journalist and the Head of Investigations & Special Projects at ITV News

The CIJ Clinic! Anything you need help with finding out, or are there any public bodies or companies who you’d like to look into? Come and be a patient at the CIJ clinic, and our trainers will do their best to help you. No appointment necessary – just bring your questions along for a one-to-one consultation. Our investigative clinics will be held in a private meeting room.

At the end of the day, we invite you to join the CIJ, the National Library of Scotland and friends after the sessions for networking drinks.

Who can attend?

The even is open to everyone over the age of 18, journalists and non-journalists alike. You will learn some investigative skills and hear different approaches to storytelling.
