13 November 2026

Friday 13th November 2026.

The CIJ are coming back to Cardiff. Once again in partnership with Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, the CIJ is returning to Wales. Join us on Friday 13th November for a day of free workshops where journalists will give practical guidance on the tools they used for their most recent investigations.

What to expect?

Ever wondered what it takes to be an investigative journalist? Ever thought something demanded further scrutiny but didn’t know where to start? If the answer is yes, then the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s free day-long event is for you.

We are offering practical talks in investigative skills:

  • Martin Tomkinson will talk about his career working as a financial reporter and intrepid investigative journalist, and offer pearls of wisdom and tips for budding investigative journalists along the way
  • Tansy Hoskins will discuss all the practicalities of conducting supply chain investigations, using case studies to guide attendees through the process of tracking commodity flows through data and shipping records
  • Maxence Peigné will share tools and databases for investigating financial crime, illustrated by a case study of an investigation into illegal online gambling
  • Leana Hosea will explain how she gathered data on historic landfill sites and mapping them to identify those that are most problematic
  • And more to be announced!

In these practical talks our trainers will share some of the tools they’ve used for their investigations and how they led to or supported stories. Laptops aren’t necessary but are useful if you want to follow along during the talks

At the end of the day, we invite you to join the CIJ, Cardiff University and friends after the sessions for networking drinks.

Who can attend?

The event is open to everyone over the age of 18, journalists and non-journalists alike. You will learn some investigative skills and hear different approaches to storytelling.
