Workshop on Climate and Environmental Journalism in Egypt

Training workshop by ClimateInArabic and led by expert trainers is dedicated to providing 20 journalists in Egypt with a deeper understanding of climate change and environmental issues as well as more journalism tools for in-depth reporting.

The primary focus of this workshop is to refine the journalists’ investigative skills and elevate their climate and environment reporting beyond surface-level reporting by providing crucial insights and expertise, shedding light on pressing climate topics that impact both Egypt and the MENA region at large.

Duration: 4 days

Workshop Focus:

  • Day 1: Insightful sessions on the basics and concepts of climate journalism
  • Day 2: Sessions on the challenges of climate change specific to the Arab region, deep dive into International climate policies, outcomes of the COP27 summit, and comprehensive investigative journalism training
  • Day 3: Open-source tools, modern software for data visualisation, scientific research and publications relevant to the field
  • Day 4: Story idea formulation, pitching ideas and collaborative reporting tips

Ahmed Ashour

Investigative journalist and trainer with ARIJ Network for Investigative Journalism. Ahmed has collaborated with organisations like Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Deutsche Welle (DW), Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CiFAR), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on cross-border investigations spanning Yemen to Egypt.

Alyaa Abo Shahba

Alyaa is a journalist, blogger, and trainer with a career spanning numerous renowned publications including Rosal Youssef, Al Watan, and Raseef22. Throughout her career, she has undertaken advanced training with global institutions such as Reuters and Deutsche Welle.

Ehab Zidan

An Egyptian investigative journalist, specialising in covering environmental and climate change issues, Ehab has overed environmental and climate change issues on various regional and international platforms, including specialised investigative reports.

Lina Yassin

A Sudanese climate journalism and development consultant, Lina has experience working on climate change communications and journalism projects across the MENA region. She worked for 5 years as the Operations Manager at Climate Tracker where she implemented a series of journalism fellowships and training on climate change and climate policy across different countries.

Shehata El-Sayed

El-Sayed is an independent investigative journalist and founder of the Open Sources Guide for Arab Journalists. He participated in the Emerging Media Initiatives Orientation Center programme and manages the "Meta" community in Arabic.

Dr. Hussein Abaza

A UN expert, member of the National Committee for Green Projects, adviser to the Ministry of Environment for Sustainable Development, and adviser to the Ministry of Planning and Development in Egypt.

Dr. Ahmed Essmat

Dr. Essmat is a researcher in media technology and digital transformation, as well as the Executive Director of the Alexandria Media Forum. In 2006, he founded the magazine "Alex Agenda," which covers cultural, artistic, and social events in Alexandria, with a particular interest in business entrepreneurs, professionally in both Arabic and English.

Ahmed Seba El-Lail

An environmental journalist and climate change researcher with over 6 years of experience covering national and international climate change topics. Ahmed has been a Climate Tracker fellow since 2018 and has worked on delivering journalism trainings across the Arab region.
