Radio Boot Camp: In-Person

Radio Boot Camp is coming to London! Join this in-person class hosted by the The Centre for Investigative Journalism and learn how to produce a podcast or radio story from start to finish.

Over the course of two days award-winning audio journalist Sally Herships will introduce you to the basic principles and craft of reporting for the ear. You’ll learn how to write with and for tape, how to use your voice as a tool and about the importance of the host intro. You’ll be introduced to audio interviewing essentials by trying out the real thing as well as strategies to employ with dry experts and best practices for sensitive sources. You’ll learn the basics of editing audio tape using Hindenburg: cut, copy, paste and fade and ethics will also be discussed. When is it ok to make internal edits to tape or not to identify a source by name?

This class is hands-on. You’ll do exercises, learn mistakes to avoid and finally put your new skills to the test with a short homework assignment. During the second day you’ll share your work and receive feedback as part of a group critique. Whether you want to report long-form or short, news or narrative, report for The Daily, The Missing Cryptoqueen or In the Dark, this workshop will give you the skills you need to get started.

This course is now sold out.
