Poonam Agarwal

Poonam Agarwal is an award-winning Independent Senior Investigative Journalist with over 20 years of experience in journalism. She is also a legal advocate.

She started her career as a TV journalist in 2005 and worked with the BBC, NDTV, Times Now, and The Quint among others.

Poonam showed how the Electoral Bonds scheme, a tool to give political donations, was being secretly used by the ruling Indian government to take bribes from big corporate houses. This was the first major scam to be reported in India for ten years.

She has also made a longform investigative documentary with the BBC named The Trap: India’s deadliest scam. The documentary exposes the Loan app scam that compelled many Indians to take their own lives.

She has won many awards: BBC News Awards; the Ramnath Goenka Award for Investigative Journalism; the Best Investigative Journalist at The News Television Awards; and the CNN Young Journalist Award, among others.

Election Integrity: The Indian Electoral Bonds Scam

The Electoral Bonds scheme was introduced by the Indian government as a tool to make political donations through banking channels. It was subsequently used by individuals within that government, according to Poonam Agarwal's investigation, to take bribes in the form of donations.
