Investigating renewable energy investments in Mozambique

In partnership with the Open Climate Reporting Initiative, Oxpeckers is hosting a webinar panel session to discuss how local journalists harness a cutting-edge tool to monitor renewable energy investments in Mozambique.

Session duration: 1 hour

Mozambican journalists Nelsa Nomade Pedro, Amade Ababucar and Buanamade Assane Buana will share their experience using PowerTracker and share pieces of knowledge from investigations that they conducted under an Oxpeckers/OCRI grant received this year. The stories Nampula far from renewable energy goalsSolar powers up lives in northern Mozambique; and Solar’s not shining for all in Cabo Delgado have covered different layers renewable energy in Mozambique with relevant data now available for journalists to engage with further.

Amade will discuss renewable investments in the country and the region of Nampula, Nelsa will share information about Mozambique’s solar power plan, while Buanamade will provide insights about the environmental impacts of renewables in Cabo Delgado.

Buanamade Assane Buana

Buanamade Assane was selected to be a teacher, following an intensive 30-day psycho-pedagogical training course at the Napipine Teacher Training School in January 1982. In 1984, he was invited by some foreigners, technical advisors from the then Media Office, now ICS, to be part of a team of journalists for the Nampula delegation, where he took his first steps in journalism.

Nelsa Momade Pedro

Nelsa Momade Pedro is a Mozambican journalist living in the city of Nampula. She has dedicated herself to publishing articles on womens’ rights, the LGBTQ+ community, renewable energy and politics. Her work is currently featured by Ikweli, and she was previously a children’s programme presenter and intern at Rádio Encontro, a Catholic broadcaster in Nampula.

Amade Abubacar

Amade Abubacar is a Mozambican journalist, researcher, trainer and human rights activist, based in Pemba. He has worked in radio, online and print media since 2008, and held the position of editor-in-chief at Macomia Nacedje radio.
