Green shields and conflicts in the Amazon: Mapping territories and land use

As part of Coda.BR Conference, Open Knowledge Brasil is holding a workshop about green shields and conflicts in the Amazon as part of the CIJ’s Open Climate Reporting Initiative (OCRI).

Class duration: 1.30 hours

This workshop will explore how to search for, collect and analyse geospatial data to identify levels of preservation inside and outside the territories, land use and deforestation.

Referred as the main data journalism event in Latin America, the 8th edition of the Brazilian Conference on Data Journalism and Digital Methods (Coda.Br) holds 18 and 19 November 2023 on the Álvaro Alvim Campus, São Paulo. It features tracks of workshops, panels, keynote, flash presentation sessions as well as networking opportunities for participants. The Open Climate Reporting Initiative (OCRI) will be present at five activities.

Technical Requirements

The free software QGIS will be used for the workshop. Participants are expected to install QGIS 3.28.9 and to make the most of the session and adequately prepare, the following videos are we suggested:

– Geographic data: ways to use it
– Basic exploration in QGIS

Jullie Pereira

She covers socio-environmental issues for InfoAmazonia and is a Letters - Portuguese Language student at the Amazonas State University (UEA). Previously, Jullie wrote for Amazônia Real, was a trainee and freelancer at Estadão and was also a reporter for the Amazonas Atual website as well as an executive producer for the Amazon Sat channel, part of the Rede Amazônica group, a Globo affiliate in the North.

Juliana Mori

Juliana Mori is a journalist specialising in audiovisual productions and geospatial data visualisation. Co-founder and editorial director of InfoAmazonia. Graduated in journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of São Paulo, she holds a master’s degree in Digital Arts from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona.
