Investigative climate journalism workshop held in Sudan
The Climate Voice Workshop in Algadarif State, Sudan, was successfully conducted by NasActive, attracting 15 selected participants from a competitive pool of 184 applicants across various states in Sudan. From 20-23 August 2023, the workshop covered a diverse range of topics including introduction to climate change, climate journalism, and investigative journalism. The impactful three-days workshop also provided insights into the Paris Agreement, international climate policies, and open-source investigation tools, along with an exploration of the nexus between climate change and conflict.
The final day was devoted to a hands-on exercise in formulating story ideas, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge in a practical setting. The journalists are now actively working on their story pitches. A select few will be chosen to further pursue and develop their investigative stories, with mentorship and support, over the next three months.
Despite the challenging context, it’s worth noting that this workshop was conducted as Sudan continues to navigate a conflict that began nearly five months ago, along with tightened restrictions on journalists. The ability to carry out such an enriching and empowering program under these circumstances not only highlights the resilience and commitment of all involved but also underscores the vital importance of climate journalism in these crucial times.
