Gerald “Gerry” Flynn

Gerald “Gerry” Flynn is a Mongabay features writer, reporting across Southeast Asia on the intersection between human rights, ecosystems and natural resource governance. He was a Rainforest Investigations Network fellow with the Pulitzer Center in 2022 and 2023, during which he investigated illegal logging networks across Cambodia, with a focus on the Cardamom Mountains.

His work for Mongabay has linked high profile government officials to environmental crimes, uncovered how illegal fauna and flora make their way into global supply chains and scrutinized conservation efforts’ impact on Indigenous communities.

Flynn served as president of the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia, advocating for greater press freedoms, until he was permanently banned from the country in January 2025. He is now based in Bangkok with his wife and two cats.

Chasing Deforestation in Cambodia

It was on the third day of the trip into the jungles of northern Cambodia when three Mongabay journalists found themselves surrounded by government rangers pointing rifles at them. Narrowly avoiding arrest, Mongabay combined satellite imagery, geospatial data, paper trails and a lot of hours in the jungle to expose how a network of politically connected timber traffickers are plundering Cambodia’s protected forests.
