The CIJ comes to Glasgow for a day of talks and workshops in partnership with the National Library of Scotland.
What to expect?
We are offering hands-on workshops in advanced investigative skills and an introduction to finding company information.
Ever wondered what it takes to be an investigative journalist? Ever thought something demanded further scrutiny but didn’t know where to start? If the answer is yes, then the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s free day-long event is for you.
- Artist Ignacio Acosta will describe the investigative tools he’s used for his research into the extractive industries.
- Martin Tomkinson will teach you some of these tools in hands-on workshops in advanced search and understanding Companies House.
- The information security session with C. Orange will look at methods to keep your sources, yourself and your stories safe and confidential. Though the tools and advice are applicable to online safety in general, the session is particularly targeted at journalists and journalism students.
- Eilidh MacGlone will show you the riches that are already held in the library for anyone researching the Covid pandemic, and how to access them.
- James Harkin will talk about disinformation during wartime and his Syria investigations.
- Our keynote speaker is James Cruickshank from The Digger, whose car has been firebombed for his intrepid investigations into serious crime in the city.
Join the CIJ and friends after the sessions for networking drinks. If you’re already working as a journalist there is a special session in the morning to show how to protect yourself and your sources.
Who can attend?
Open to everyone over the age of 18, journalists and non-journalists alike. You will learn some investigative skills and hear different approaches to story-telling.
