The Marikana Tragedy

On 16 August last year 34 miners were shot dead by the South African police and over 70 were wounded. Another 250 were arrested and charged with murder.

Immediately the police said they shot in self-defence. Slowly another picture is emerging, some of it through the work of the Commission set up by the South African government, some of it from local journalists.

What really happened at Marikana? And what does it tell us about the new South Africa?

Jim Nichol, a lawyer representing the families of the miners at the Commission discusses these issues.
