Newcastle CIJ Conference

We have finally realised our dream to take the CIJ Summer Conference outside London with a one-day conference at Newcastle University on Saturday (29 September).

The day was made possible thanks to the support of the Google News Initiative and marked the launch of our Access to Tools training.

We’re delighted to report that the sell-out event was a great success.

BuzzFeed’s Alex Campbell started the day with a talk about investigations that included Russian assassinations, money laundering and government corruption.

We then split off into workshops that looked at how to use the Freedom of Information Act, Find Data, and three sessions of Access to Tools.

The day finished with Amelia Gentleman in conversation with Zubeida Malik discussing her investigation into the Windrush scandal.

We had some excellent questions from a very engaged audience and a great time was had by all.

If you weren’t able to attend the conference, or you did but want to listen again, we have the audio and slides from Alex Campbell’s BuzzFeed presentation, and the audio of Amelia Gentleman in conversation with Zubeida Malik.

We hope this will be the first of many conferences outside London.

And, if you are interested in booking a two-hour, free Access to Tools training session for your workplace, please contact juliet [at] tcij.org
