Use Your Open Data Skills to Expose the International Arms Trade

On June 22nd, open data enthusiasts are invited for a fun day of collaboration and innovation as Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) opens its arms trade datasets for an intensive design challenge.

    Make a difference

The arms trade is a deadly, corrupt business, responsible for terrible abuses of human rights and wastes of precious resources. CAAT’s vital mission is to confront this injustice and we’re asking you to join us in getting the facts out to those who need to know. Get stuck into our data and show us what you can make of it. From apps to maps, mashups and vibrant print media, we want to expose the arms trade as never before.

    Meet your team

This is going to be a multidisciplinary event. We’re inviting professionals from the full spectrum of Open Data, Infographics and Visualisation to form mixed rapid design teams. You’ll make links with active innovators from other fields and get to develop your ideas and skills together through a well-structured design process. We’ll have industry mentors on hand to keep your team on track, and arms trade experts to give you all the information you need to build something brilliant.

    Accept the challenge

We'll be presenting multiple datasets containing details of UK and European arms exports to the rest of the world, and extensive information about British weapons manufacturers. We want you and your team to design a prototype application or infographic that presents them in a new, incisive way. Delve deep into the numbers or combine them with other online datasets. We're looking for exciting projects we can take forward in partnership with you to add to our growing suite of web apps and printed material.
