    Course Outline

    This two-day course - taught by Martin Tomkinson, Rob McKinnon and Michael Gillard - will show you where to find company data and to shed light on the hidden depths of the financial world. The emphasis will be on teaching practical skills rather than a series of lectures. The objective of this course is to ensure that all participants know where and how to look for relevant information. The course will take in company information available in the UK, Europe, the United States, Asia, Australia and assorted offshore tax havens.

    This is the first of a series of courses held over three weekends in July that starts with finding company data, encompasses the Company Accounts for Beginners that is running at the Summer School and finishes with Advanced Company Accounts. The Advanced Company Accounts course is only suitable for those who have attended the Summer School or are already confident reading and understanding company accounts.

    You can book for either Company Data, or Advanced Accounts (providing you have previous knowledge) at a cost of £275 full price or £225 NUJ, or the full Accounts package for £750 full price or £650 NUJ. The full package includes the two weekend courses as well as a one day beginners accounts course at the Summer School which will be Friday 12 July.

    The course will be held in Room B307c, which is on the third floor accessed from Northampton Square reception

    Saturday, July 6

    9.30 – 11am    
    Rob McKinnon - Reconciling company names to company data using OpenCorporates and the OpenRefine (formerly Google Refine) data cleaning tool - matching a file of government spending supplier data to companies and how to follow links from OpenCorporates to Companies House and US SEC filings.

    11.15 – 1pm    
    Martin Tomkinson – How to get the best out of the Companies House website and the do’s and don’ts of searching a giant database of more than 3 million companies.

    2- 3.15pm
    Martin Tomkinson – Practical examples of searching Companies House for companies and limited liability partnerships large and small.

    3.30 – 5pm      
    Michael Gillard – the SEC’s EDGAR database of US and foreign public listed companies + private US companies in Delaware/Nevada/Wyoming + Canada + Australia + South Africa + InvestEgate

    Michael Gillard - Congratulations -The end of the line: British Virgin Islands, Caymans, Bermuda, Liechtenstein, Panama and Liberia.
